I often wonder if the challenges we face get more difficult as we get older. Although I’m still young, I have already faced a number of challenges in my life already. A recent challenge for me was to prepare for, and take, the IELTS test which I have never done before.

Fortunately for me, I was offered the chance to study my Master’s in the UK, but I had one obstacle, and that was the IELTS test. I needed to get an overall score of seven to be able to apply to study at my chosen university. What made it more demanding was the fact that I had only two months to achieve this score.

A difficult challenge I met was preparing the GAOKAO, which was the college entrance examination in China.

This exam has been considered the biggest and most essential exam for most senior high students in mainland China. It’s also regarded as the fairest way of providing higher education opportunities to students. My challenge was to get ready for the exam and score high as much as possible because the better score I got the higher-ranked university I will be matriculated.

Before I entered the final year of my degree course, I made quite a big life decision. I decided that I wanted to go and live and work abroad in Australia. This was a big decision and it took me quite a long time to finally decide it was what I really wanted to do.

It was difficult for several reasons. Firstly, because it was a huge change – going off to another country and culture and leaving everyone I love behind, and everything that’s familiar. Secondly, my parents are getting older now and I was worried about who might look after them if I go to live in another country. But I talked about my concerns with my brother and sister and they told me not to worry – that I should take the chance to experience living and working abroad. And the third reason was that I wasn’t sure if my parents would think it was a good idea or not. I was a little nervous when I told them about my plan – but once they accepted the idea, they were very enthusiastic and happy for me.
