I would like to talk about a set of coins that my family has kept for a long time. It was passed by my great grandfather. So, our family has actually preserved it for nearly a century.

It has four coins, all of which are from the early Republic of China period. Each of the coins was carved with an icon of Yuan Shikai who was a warlord and the president in the year 1914. There’s also an interesting history about him. You know, he was the only president and emperor throughout the history of China, though his 83-day imperial status was not internationally recognized.

I’m gonna talk about a vintage antique rocking baby cradle. It was handmade by my great grandfather with maple wood(枫木), which is quite rare in my country. But apparently, my great grandfather was a famous carpenter so he had ways of getting rare wood.(他有搞到稀有木材的门道) This cradle is pretty old, with over 150 years of history. So it is practically a family heirloom(传家宝).

1.What things do families keep for a long time?

I think usually things that have special meanings would be treated with extra care in the family. For example, antiques, which are passed down from the previous generations, are often unique and have historical meanings to the family. So, of course the family would take care of it very well. Besides, for family specifically, if something can unite the family and help them stay connected, be it a book or a picture of a late family member, the family would certainly want to keep it well too. And they will probably even present it on special family occasions.
