When I was in my second year of university, I was given a chance of voluntarily teaching in countryside. I knew deep down my heart (内心深处) that I am a warm-hearted person, but it was a really difficult decision to make.

For a pampered city girl like me, I was not sure whether I could handle (应付) the toughness (艰苦) there where there was no conformable bed for me, and the food must be unhygienic (不干净的) with limited choices, somehow I felt nervous and kind of resistant, but I knew that I would be ashamed of myself if I did not go. Especially when I think of how eager the kids in the rural areas (乡村地区) would love to be educated by a proper teacher and how they would long for knowledge.

3.Do parents in your country make decisions for their children?

Well, it really depends. Some do let their children make their own decisions, but more like small decisions like what they want for dinner or what color they want for their new clothes. However, in traditional Confucian societies such as China, major decisions related to education and future employment are very much a family, if not a solely parental, affair, and that should be decided by the whole family. For example, some of my friends got to choose their majors but a lot of friends I know had to take majors that their parents chose for them, as their parents consider the competition for university places, future employment prospects, and the longer-term prospects of immigration as the main motivating factors.

4.Who will be helpful when making decision in your country?

To be honest, I still think that parents and elders are really helpful when making decisions in China. We weight our decisions all the time according to experience, most of the time without even thinking about it and apparently, our parents and grandparents have more rich experience than us, especially than children. Therefore, when children need to make a decision, it is important for them to ask help from their parents and any experienced person they know. For example, parents may know what is the easiest way of how to study well and how to make a proper meal for Christmas. Therefore, asking advice from them would be a good way when making decisions.
