The sufficiency in food supply is vitally important to the survival of humanity. Despite the continuous breakthroughs that have been made in modem agriculture,human’s demand for food has never be satisfied.

The continuously growing world population is seemingly the direct driving force to this phenomenon. By 2020, the global population has more than tripled from the size in the mid-20th century to over 7.7 billion, which means that there are much more mouths to feed in spite of the increasing yields brought by the latest fanning techniques, such as greenhouse plantation and genetic modification.

In fact, this is merely a fraction of the truth behind the scene. Various aggressive profit-driven business strategies widely adopted in the contemporary food industry is also largely responsible for this trend. In order to seize a larger market share, many multi-national food producers keep expanding their product lines of processed foods, ranging from snacks to beverages, in terms of the flavours and pricing levels to meet different customers' preferences. Such a competition for options leads to not only the endless demand for raw ingredients but also a massive quantity of unsold end products wasted after their expiry. Another typical example is the promotion methods, like bulk sale, for higher sales and the larger portion of meals served at restaurant for higher price, both of which aim at generating greater profit. The consequence, however, might be the expired processed food or leftover from dining tables ending up in the trash bins.
