In contemporary society, a significant proportion of the population spends a decreasing amount of time at home. While the causes of this trend are easy to recognize, finding and implementing solutions for it might prove to be extremely difficult. The factors leading to this social phenomenon and some of its social effects are presented in this essay.

To begin with the causes, what I believe is that fierce competition in the workplace brought about by globalization is one of the main factors causing people to spend less time at home. In modern society, not only the fathers in families are breadwinners but also the mothers. This trend, which is now global, has a serious psychological effect on family life and therefore, on society as a whole. It has been proven in many studies that long working hours have affected the divorce rate. Many young couples choose to focus on their careers and have less time for their spouse. As a result, both of them lack the proper communication and relationship which are crucial for maintaining a happy and healthy relationship. Furthermore, nowadays, daily expenses of a family have been rising day-by-day, such as the money spent on groceries, petroleum and so on.
