It is not uncommon for large organizations to have elderly people as senior management team. However, there is a belief that young people should also be given opportunities to exercise leadership. Personally I agree with this view.

Admittedly, having elderly people as leaders or directors in organizations bring various benefits. First, there is no denying that the old have rich experience in management and tend to have big-picture thinking and long-term vision. They are more considerate when it comes to making important decisions and therefore can drive things in the right direction. Besides, compared to young people, the old generation is generally more persevere and strong-willed when facing adversity. This is particularly vital for emerging companies, since competition is increasingly fierce in today’s commercial society. By contrast, the young generation is immature and many are often spoilt and less responsible. If they are granted senior positions, they may make impulsive decisions due to lack of experience and the future of a company is likely to be at risk.

Recent years have seen many young entrepreneurs, who started billion dollar companies, fresh out from college or even high school, which triggers a debate among whether the youth or the olds are more competent for leadership. Personally, I think both the groups have their particular advantages but elder leaders are usually regarded as more reliable, experienced, and wise.

It is widely accepted that age is cue for wisdom. Since the elders have accumulated decades of occupational abilities in their position, they are very familiar with the whole market as well as their own professional skills. In this sense, when unexpected emergencies accrue, they are more likely to stay calm and figure out the solution in an instant manner.

Apart from that, the seniors are expected to have better interpersonal skills. Researches have proved that when people get older, they become better at thinking about social conflicts, so does their crystallized intelligence – combining knowledge from various sources. On the contrary, it has a higher possibility for younger leaders to get emotional when they are in great pressure.
