Urban planners might face the problem of how to meet people’s growing housing demand and provide them a more livable environment at the same time.

There is no denying that trees are an important part of the urban environment and a city with easy access to green spaces is more livable and attractive for most people. Trees can absorb carbon dioxide and create oxygen, thereby improving air quality of cities. People living in cities with plenty of trees are less likely to suffer health problems caused by smog and fumes. This is important because today traveling by car has become a major means of travel in most cities.

Besides, dense tree canopy in urban areas can bring economic benefit. Communities and business districts with healthy tree cover attract new industry and commercial activity. Studies show where a canopy of trees exists; apartments and offices rent more quickly and have a higher occupancy rate. For residential area,

In recent years, global urbanization has been advancing at a staggering speed, one evidence of which could be found in the fact that an increasing number of housing are being constructed in major cities and towns, occupying a vast expanse of urban land. Under such circumstances, some people argue that it is more beneficial to plant more trees instead of building more housing in urban open areas. Personally, I tend to side with the view.

Undoubtedly, planting trees in open areas would be a cost-effective solution to the main environmental problems cities are suffering from. Firstly, trees could greatly improve cities’ air quality. For instance, owing to private car use and industrial pollution, many major cities without adequate green space are frequently exposed to air pollution. Some are even facing severe smog problems. Scientific research has shown that tress can help cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing such pollutants as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Secondly, trees can also effectively reduce noise pollution. Planted at strategic points in cities, trees can abate major noises from freeways and airports.
