Reward, as its definition shows, may include any incentive that encourages a student to work harder. The commonly used rewards range from studying tools like pencils or books to financial bonus like scholarship. However, whom the rewards should go to has aroused a heated debate. To those who are already the best or to those who make progress? That is a question.

The logic of rewarding the best students is to express the recognition for those who can fight their way to the top of the class or the school. This is a quite traditional strategy that is adopted by schools at all levels. In contrast, if the reward is shifted to others, all that can make these top students proud will seem less meaningful. And this will absolutely dampen their enthusiasm. Therefore, all of these reasons may justify why rewards should be granted to the elites.

Reward in the process of education is a commonly discussed topic. Some people believe that students with improvements should be rewarded. However, others believe that we should only reward those who achieve the best academic results. In my opinion, while it is important to recognize the effort by top students, it is more effective to reward students who show improvements.

Admittedly, rewarding students with the best scores can encourage students to work harder. Studying can be a lengthy process. Many students find it difficult to persist with trying hard at school because they do not see any immediate benefits. Rewarding students with the best academic results regularly can create an element of competition and provide a tangible short-term goal for students, which gives students more motivation to maintain the intensity at a high level.
