Nowadays, buildings, especially skyscrapers, are being erected all over the world. Architects often find themselves in a dilemma when deciding whether functionality or aesthetics should be the superior aim of their designs. From my own perspective, a balance should be struck between both qualities.

Convincing arguments abound in this point that a building's appearance can be of vital importance to the culture and tourism industry of a city. To start with, we cannot deny the fact that architectural style can convey the historical fabric of the city and represent traditional cultural identities. For instance, the Forbidden City in Beijing shows the prosperity of the Ming and Qing dynasty. The architectural style can be precious cultural heritage for our descendents. Therefore, it is fair to say the presentation of a building’s exterior can be of great cultural value. Moreover, in the present age, some buildings have become landmarks in any metropolis, such as KingKey Financial Centre in Shen Zhen, which attracts thousands of visitors.
