Advertising is ubiquitous. Wherever you go, whatever you read, you are likely to be bombard by adverts touting their products. Some are used to raise public awareness or to educate people. Some are methods of promotion. As far as I am concerned, commercial advertisements influence people adversely.
Adverts depicting their products as necessities for a fancy life, shape people’s values toward life and manipulate their shopping needs. In order to cash in, copywriters are employed to come up with eye-catching adverts. Most of them exaggerate the benefits and hide or downplay the drawbacks of a certain product. As a result, these tempting messages and persuasive arguments succeed in creating impulsive purchase, and make people believe that attractive men and women can transform their lives after used such products.
Furthermore, advertising, erase individual’s sense of identity and cause them to buy the same product. Almost all the ads portray the product as trendy and indispensable. By doing this, advertisements formulate peer effect for people who want to be charming and fashionable. It is not unusual that one buys something without knowing much about the product, but merely assuming that his or her peers are using it. The fast-fashion industry is a case in point. Thank to its advertising, women and some men were coaxed to throw out their clothes bought a year ago and buy the latest model which often turns out only fractionally superior to the older one.
In conclusion, despite its big role in modern society, advertising needs to be strictly regulated and restricted because the strategies employed in advertising is becoming increasingly insidious and vicious.
