Art helps to construct the culture of a society, provoking thoughts and enabling the public to perceive the world from a new perspective. That said, I do not believe that artists are entitled to financial support from the government. Hence, I profoundly agree that it is more important to invest public funds in other sections.

Firstly, the top priority of governments is to develop economy. As opposed to art which is normally regarded as a component of superstructure, economy is the base of a society. Indeed, economic growth is a vital avenue through which lower rates of poverty and better living standards can be attained. More often than not, only when human’s basic demands such as needs for food and health are decently satisfied will they seek higher needs, aesthetic needs for instance.

Another area that requires urgent attention is environmental pollution. Take global warming, for example, not only has the rising temperature put some species on the verge of extinction, but it has contributed to thousands of casualties due to occurrence of events like heat waves and droughts. If the current trend continues, rising sea levels would likely to inundate some islands, leading to the loss of habitats of many animals and island dwellers. The protection of lives, in my opinion, definitely comes before supporting artists.

Last but not least, education, as a basic human right, is still unaffordable to many citizens, especially in developing countries. Actually, human resource is the cornerstone of development, be it economically or culturally. If the public does not have easy access to education, social progress is likely to be hampered. For this reason, the cause of education shall be one of the prime tasks of governments.

Granted, artists have made a substantial contribution to the progress of our society. Yet I believe that government money, which derives from all taxpayers, should be used to cater for the majority of citizens’ needs first and to ensure a sustainable development.
