The bar chart gives a breakdown of the original nationalities of the immigrants in Australia.

In 1962, the majority of the immigrants were Italians, accounting for 40%, far outweighing the total of the rest four countries, i.e. New Zealand, Vietnam, India and the UK. People from Vietnam were the fewest, taking up a neglectable share.

However, after two decades, a greater balance was achieved. The percentages of immigrants from the five countries averaged around 20%, fluctuating between 15% and 25%. Interestingly, there was an explosion among Vietnamese immigrants, constituting a quarter of all.

The bar chart presents the information with regard to the change of proportions of different immigrants to Australia from five countries in three years, namely 1962, 1982 and 2002.

The proportion of Italian immigrants underwent the most dramatic change throughout this period. The figure for it stood at nearly 40% in 1962, before falling radically to 20% in 1982. Although the declining trend continued in the following two decades, the percentage of Italian immigrants still accounted for the largest of all the immigrants from any other countries. Similarly, the percentage of New Zealand immigrants also saw a drop, declining from 8 percent in 1962 to less than 5 percent in 2002.
