Globalization has made the world interconnected closely, so it is necessary for people to have a knowledge of what is going on in the world. However, the idea of imparting international news to teenagers in class attracts growing concerns from people who believe it wastes students’ precious school time. From my perspective, teaching students international news should be view in a positive light.
It is first important to realize that this practice can broaden students’ horizons. International affairs allow one’s view not to be restricted within his or her own country. Being aware of different cultures and various novel issues in other countries can enrich students’ knowledge and deepen their understanding of the world. Another advantage is that it is beneficial to students’ career development.The familiarity with the current global situation will help them identify the direction of their development. This is particularly the case when it comes to the choice of either major or job, because people are more likely to succeed if they take into account the trend of the times when making decisions.
Although learning international news is advantageous, what worries people is that it may lead to a tremendous loss of school time. High school students, especially those who are preparing for the university entrance examination, have a great number of courses to study, and one of the most valuable resources to them is time, which is supposed to be spent on those essential subjects rather than on the acquirement of the news around the world. Another point to note is that the news may mislead students. Due to the benefits of politics, media agencies, sometimes, may distort the facts or conceal the truth, which will hinder students from getting the real information.
To summarize, although learning international news in class has its drawbacks, we should recognize that it is significant for students’ development by enabling them to have a better understanding of the world.
