The process of urbanization has seen more establishment of new towns and appearance of high-rise buidlings but meanwhile the gradual loss of fields, woods and open space. Therefore, I think while governments are working on the city layout, greater priority should be given to public parks and sports facilities than to shopping malls.

My major argument is based on health and environmental consideration. It is a well-known fact that trees in parks aborb carbon dioxide, the culprit for the worrying global warming, as well as noise, whether from passing vehicles or from construction sites. And a stroll in a park can put people at ease. I personally experience this benefit by sometimes taking a short walk in a park near my working place during the lunch break. The shade provided by tall trees and the fragrant flowers always drive away the stress and unpleasant feelings I encounter at work. I get refreshed after returning to my office. Furthermore, sports facilities, often built inside a park, can attract people of all ages to take exercise. A basketball court, for instance, is particularly appealing to young people, who would otherwise probably spend their leisure time playing computer games indoors.

When it comes to city construction, one debatable issue is how governments should allocate their resources into different sectors, for example, public gardens and shopping malls. Considering both pros and cons of each side, I think parks and sports facilities deserve more investment from the government.

Firstly, parks and recreation facilitate social interactions that are critical to maintaining community cohesion and bond as they provide a meeting place where residents can develop social ties. Urban woodland can be used to bring groups together for activities like walking and bird-watching. What’s more, trees are not only valuable in absorbing carbon dioxide, but also beneficial for children to play with, which exposes them to the nature and helps them discover their sense of adventure.
