Technological advance has been applied to many aspects of our life, with no exception of the food sector. One milestone is the emergence of genetically-modified food, which, while enlarging our choices, causes a controversy as to its impact to our health and the food industry.

Advocates believe genetic technology satisfies people’s needs to the greatest extent. Take China for example. There are still millions of people facing food shortage. The use of this technology, which greatly increases the output of crops, will alleviate this problem. Also, the resulting protein increase in the food benefits people who suffer long-term malnutrition. Furthermore, traditional farming method is subject to extreme weather and pest invasion. Though pesticide can be used, it pollutes the soil as well as crops themselves. By contrast, the DNA-related technology can bypass these problems, enhancing the survival chance of crops. Hence, farmers would suffer fewer losses.

As science and technology are making massive strides and thus revolutionising the way we lead our life - be it online shopping, virtual reality, or fiendishly complex medical procedures, one particular area, however, manages to elude public attention. A diverse array of agricultural novelties - including hybrid crops, genetically modified food - as well as cutting-edge farming methods and equipments would not have been possible without constantly improved technologies. While some may staunchly embrace these positive changes, others cast serious doubt on such unwarranted over-optimism.

The scientific improvement, as argued by some advocates of agricultural technologies, has out of doubt adequately met the basic need of the general population for food. Propagation of mankind is probably the greatest contribution of technologies to which any alleged improvements in others aspects of our life will pale in comparison. Agriculture is a highly risky business - not only to farmers but also to the rest of the mankind whose survival hinges on farm produce. The ever-increasing occurrence of extreme climate and soil degradation - an environmental woe confronting many modern agrarian societies - is largely to blame for the inability of farming industry to meet the growing demand of the soaring world population, an issue that hits poverty-stricken regions the hardest. Fortunately, technologies such as hybrid rice in China and genetically modified organisms, which triple, if not more, the amount of agricultural production employing traditional farming methods, have come to the rescue. Without them, our world leaders would not have been debating over geopolitical matters, nor would our scientists be enthusiastically exploring the potential of virtual reality or similarly state-of-the-art technologies. The reason is simple and clear: none of other human concerns would ever beat the need for survival.
