Artists’ position has never weakened, even in today’s world marked by rapid technological progress and convenience-oriented mindset. It seems to me that their significance is highly related to people’s well-being.

Based on research on psychology and my personal feeling, one’s happiness is largely bound with spiritual satisfaction. The craving for spiritual food can only be supplied by various forms of art ranging from literature works to paintings exhibited in galleries. Through these arts, people broaden their horizons by knowing more about the past and other countries as well as gaining an insight into human nature. Even for those with less pursuit of art, there are popular art works, such as films and concerts, that can entertain them, massaging their stressful soul in busy daily rountines.

The dichotomy of arts and science perpetuates the historical evolution of human civilization.The Renaissance was characterized by a revival and resurgence of a diverse range of art forms while science was still in its nascent phase of development. However, barely a few centuries passed before the converse turns into a reality. Despite the seemingly dwindling importance of artists and their artworks amidst the massive, global technological revolutions, any suggestion of rapid technological progress justifying the fall of arts rests on shaky ground.

The indispensable role served by artists can be largely explained by the fact that what arts can offer is precisely what science attempts to stifle. Granted, technological progress revolutionizes our everyday life in surprisingly unexpected ways. However,once we have accepted the omnipresence of technological novelties, the outcome is barely surprising. The industrial automatons churn out products in such an orderly fashion that even the slightest hint of “surprise” might jeopardize the entire assembly line; the same holds true for any other technological products in which mankind takes enormous pride. After all, technological inventions are expected to act on instructions programmed by humans. What humans have gone to extreme lengths to keep at bay when dealing with state-of-the-art technologies is precisely what we crave when dealing
