Buzzwords such as “climate change”, “global warming”, and “low-carbon lifestyle” that used to dominate newspaper headlines have gradually lapsed into clichés. International Climate Change Conference, an annual event that world’s top leaders meet to discuss key strategies to combat global warming, is now preceded by much less media fanfare. Pessimists thus assert that mankind has come to accept the defeat in the battle against the seemingly inevitable warming of the Earth. However, the slightest hint of such idea would negate all the previous and ongoing efforts expended and lead us towards self-destruction.

Granted, tackling climate change is a task of such gargantuan proportion that even the infinite wisdom of the brightest minds on the planet combined is stumped. Ranging from promotion of green lifestyle, implementation of stringent industrial emission standards to state-of-the-art technologies such as carbon capture and sequestration, these strategies, albeit sound and flawless in theory, fail miserably in actual practice: the global temperature is still spiraling out of control; the gigantic Arctic icebergs are losing their defense against the drastic change of ambient temperature, doomed to a total collapse. Perhaps, the path to fighting global warming head-on is already a dead end. As the war wears on, climate change will eventually escalate into a threat grave enough to unnerve the most sanguine scientists fighting at the forefront.

Nowadays, though individuals have suffered a lot from climate change, there is still a voice that we are supposed to tolerate the change, concerning the possible impact of prevention measures on the economic growth. However, from my perspective, it is difficult to justify the argument.

To begin with, the destructive consequence of climate change is so severe and broad that the tolerance on it is undesired. The rare effort on the prevention is contributive to the more disastrous effects including the glacier melting, seasonal drought and flood and so on. In this case, there must be measures adopted to prevent the disasters. Otherwise, when worse is getting worse, no way will be left for humans to fight against the occurrence of the outrageous disasters.
