Along with the rapid development of the Internet technology, especially the boom in mobile Internet, the interpersonal ties and interaction mode are undergoing a significant change.

Some argue that individuals are becoming increasingly independent of each other, as most of their needs can be met by the Internet rather than family members. Children do not expect their parents to read stories for them as much as before, for a huge amount of eletronic material is obtainable online. Adults can pass their spare time by watching online movies instead of meeting friends in person.

The sweeping, pervasive force of globalization appears to connect every individual, company, and government together in an inextricably complex fashion: real-time instant messaging has been made possible between strangers who are geographically far apart; rival corporations merge or forge alliance in an effort to create synergistic competitive advantages. It is therefore tempting for some to rush to the conclusion that independence, which used to be deemed a valuable asset, is now rapidly lapsing into a thing of the past.

Those standing firmly behind such view are not entirely misguided, not least because the world has been advancing at such a stunning pace that what was simple and easily achievable has now turned exceedingly complex: traditional tailor’s, often run by the most skilled in a single family, is now disappearing, giving way to formidable apparel companies that involve a chain of tens of thousands of suppliers, designers, and distributors; civil strife, a political woe that is held accountable for embroiling its innocent citizens in ceaseless military confrontations, is now oftennipped in the bud by international interventions spearheaded by the western powers; even the simple mix of dishes that constitute one’s daily meal is not so much a matter of personal choice as a serious science at the mercy of nutritionists and health experts. It is precisely such drastic changes in our life, for better or worse, that complicate matters to the extent that virtually everything is beyond the reach of our individual power and that dependence proves the sole solution.
