In contemporary society, it is a growing tendency that adults of all ages incline to live alone rather than enter a stable relationship with someone. There are numerous factors contributing to such phenomenon that will exert both positive and negative influences on society.

In fact, the reason why people live alone lies in many aspects. The most obvious one is that at present, accompanying with the high divorce rate, the age people getting married is older. For unmarried modern citizens, under pressure of busy work or study, it seems there is limited time to meet the right person in life. For couples, the lack of communication and stressful lifestyle may easily lead to conflicts and end the marriage. Moreover, thanks to social and economic progress as well as the advancement of science and technology, people today are more independent financially and psychologically.

Today, people’s lifestyles in the cities undergo a rapid transition from the traditional model to more ‘independent’ ones, influenced by the impressive development of the society. It is common to see that many of them live by themselves. There are a variety of factors that have been proposed to contribute to this phenomenon. Before presenting my opinion, I tend to explore the reasons why they live alone as well as analyze the benefits and defects in the following paragraphs.

One possibility is that peoples’ right to choose their own living style is increasingly emphasized. When the children are 18, they might have stronger desire to leave home, renting an apartment and finding a roommate to live with instead of purely living off their parents. Besides,in the most recent period,due to the social development and urbanization, better job opportunities are offered in the metropolis so that the individuals no matter in which age groups are willing to seek for occupations to improve their job prospect.This may also give rise to this phenomenon.
