The increasing number of vehicles running on streets, especially during rush hours, not only makes traffic inconvenient, but also brings about environment problems, such as air pollution and noise. To both alleviate traffic congestion and improve environment, many cities set a specific day of the year as vehicle-free day. However, in my mind, this policy can hardly take effects but generate more troubles.

Admittedly, with the introduction of vehicle-free day, more citizens will answer the call by giving up driving and choose other more environment friendly ways of traveling, such as public transportation, bicycle or even walking. It is such an annoying experience that we all hate: being caught in serious traffic jam and spending twice as much as time to battle through one’s way. As it is supposed, the fewer private cars we have, the less crowded streets will be, and less exhausted emission passengers breathe in. The joint efforts made by the public will make a huge difference in overall traffic condition and environment.

As you have got accustomed to the annoying noise produced by the cars running along the street, can you imagine a quiet day without cars? Actually this has already been practiced throughout the world. Last year, September 22 was set aside as the “vehicle-free day”, when people were encouraged to walk, ride the bicycle, or take public transportation such as the bus, the taxi and the metro rather than drive their own cars.
