One of the most important services of modern government is to aggregate funds for common needs and public good. It is almost impossible for the government to make a budget that is satisfying to all taxpayers holding divergent or even poles apart opinions. In my mind, to fund the search of extra-terrestrials is unwise and the government ought to focus on current intricate problems on earth.

To begin with, it is dangerous and maybe disastrous for the government to recklessly search and contact alien civilization. The reason is simple that whether the alien culture we encounter in outer space is friendly or hostile is unpredictable. There is possibility that the intelligent life we meet in outer space has much more advanced technologies and is seeking targets for invasion. Consequently, the irresponsible connection driven by curiosity may lead people peacefully dwelling on earth into destruction of homeland. Without capable weapons to defense the earth, human beings may face the destination of massacre or enslavement. At the moment when everything is irreversible, it will be too late.

Aliens, unique and mysterious life on other planets, can never fail to catch the public’s attention, due to which funds are invested by some of governments to make further exploration on whether there exist such lives and what life they are leading. However, it is argued that compared with alien discovery, a great number of social problems deserve more funding, including various pollutions, poverty, lack of resources and the like.

Some advocates on the pursuit of life on other planets argue that the alien exploration, regarded as a deeper understanding about the world, can meet the curiosity about the outer space of individuals. The surge of science fiction movies or books has aroused the strong desire for people to learn more about the beings on other planets. It is reasonable for these advocates to expect some governmental funds to satisfy their desire. However, the discovery of alien life demands a great amount of money and the discovery is likely to pose potential threat to the life on the earth. How about the possibility that aliens can find the way to attach humans?
