We live in an age inundated with advertising, from commercials on TV to posters on the sides of buses. Some argue that advertising positively affects economy, while others believe it exerts adverse social effects. This essay agrees that adverting is necessary in the business world but it needs to be controlled.

On the one hand, it is important to note that advertising does have its positive economic side. Firstly, advertising can encourage companies to compete and provide new products. This persuades more consumers to buy because these products meet the needs and wants of more consumers. Thus, the economy is positively affected. In addition, advertising can help create more jobs. As the demand for products and services goes up because of advertising, more people are needed to manufacture, supply, ship and test those products and services. Thus, more jobs are created.

From the moment we wake up and unlock the screen of cell phone to the moment we turn off the TV or computer and prepare to sleep, we encounter countless written, graphic or video advertisements of various forms. Willingly or unwillingly, we today live in a society where advertisements are ubiquitous and inescapable.

Admittedly, advertisements, as a powerful vehicle of product information, bring benefits to both consumers and companies. By introducing product functions and performances, commercials are supposed to be people’s decision-making helpers. Otherwise, consumers will easily get lost in front of numerous options available in the market.
