范文1:
How to establish a more balanced and structured university curriculum has been a headache for many educationalists. Recently, it is argued that universities should not teach theoretical subjects, but focus on practical courses instead. In my opinion, this will contribute little to cultivating more competitive students.
There is no denying that practical courses are demanded by the ever-developing society. As the society has stepped into the information age and commercialization is sweeping across the world, subjects like marketing and computing, programming seem to be geared to social demands, and college students equipped with relevant knowledge and skills are more likely to seek for better employment after graduation. By contrast, theoretical subjects seem to be out of date and too academic to be directly applied into the real-life tasks.

范文2:
What is the meaning of university education? This question has been a controversial social issue in debate. Some people argue its main purpose is to train students to be competent in future jobs in companies. However, many others believe university education has more important functions, academically and socially. Personally, I believe both views are on the right side, and my reasons would be explored as below.
Firstly, I have to concede that preparation for the employment in university meets the primary requirement of students. In an age full of fierce job competition, youngsters generally view university education as an essential investment, from tuitions fees to 4-year life. What they like to harvest in university, in turn, should be professional knowledge, practical skills and opportunities of internship, all of which can give them advantages in job hunting. Therefore, the employment-focused purpose of university is reasonable and suitable for original needs and interests of students, as education customers.
However, other functions of university education are also equally as significant as the former one. Naturally, a university plays a key role in developing all kinds of subjects, including science, literature, arts and so forth. So, the university should lay emphasis on the freedom and diversity of courses options, thus ensuring every subject can attract students with interests and talents in it. Otherwise, if a university only serves as the function of shaping students as good would-be employees, then pragmatic courses like computer and accounting would dominate the campus, meanwhile, the unpractical or theoretical ones, from history to astronomy to archeology, would lose the popularity and influence, and will gradually go to extinction in a long term.
