It is quite common to see a harmonious scene in films or TV series that a father or mother is vividly reading stories to their child before sleeping. However, some people would argue that the thing parents do is not necessary now that there are many other sources of stories which could be gained from the media by children themselves.

Those who are in favor of sharing stories with children tend to believe that it has become an indispensable part of the quality time in the family, which means that parents could make full use of the time to strengthen the intimate bond with their children because they could feel the love from parents. Also, during the time spent together, parents could pay attention to emotional needs of their children to ensure that they can live a healthy lifestyle instead of developing bad habits such as getting addicted to computer games. Another merit lies in the fact that the life principles beneath the stories would be available to children with the help of their parents’ explanation, which would be beneficial to children’s development.

Nowadays, there is much disagreement over the parenting tasks to help children grow. Some people believe that there is a need for parents to read stories to their children, but others propose that children do not need parents since they can listen to stories from a variety of sources. I will discuss both points of view before giving my own opinion.

People who support the former point of view put forward that first and foremost, sharing a story with children is indispensably significant as it contributes to the strengthening of family bonding. In the face of stiff competition of modern world, working parents are busily scheduled to ensure an advantageous position. So the parent-child contact greatly shrinks. Thus, reading stories before bed is simply an enjoyable and easy way for parents to take time off to instill parental affections to kids. Furthermore, reading or telling stories by parents shapes children’s learning skills. Young kids are in the process of language acquisition. Parents are good teachers in helping children command language abilities like pronunciation and vocabulary as well develop the ability to pay attention, raise questions and find solutions. Actually, the practice significantly increases children's potential for academic success.
