Francis Bacon once said,“ Reading maketh a full man” while for me, travelling makes a well-rounded man. However, with the unprecedented development of the science and technology, more and more people tend to believe that visiting other places is a waste of time since we can broaden our knowledge about other cultures and customs via books, films and the Internet. From my own perspective, this lopsided opinion is obviously untenable and short-sighted.

In fact, some individuals are the stalwart supporters of the view that it is the trip to the outside world that enables people to expand their horizon on different cultures and people. For one thing, unlike books, going sightseeing in a foreign country is a multi-sensory experience which allows you to interact with the local residents face-to-face, taste the scrumptious food in the local community and appreciate the traditional cultures of the host country. For another, the information about the places you are to visit on the Internet is sometimes misleading or even paradoxical whereas everything you see or hear during your trip is the first-hand and authentic experience that will help you develop a correct perception.

Would the Internet can replace the practical traveling abroad, in terms of the letting people learn foreign cultures? Personally, I believe this assertion overestimates the function of the Internet, and my reasons will be explored as below.

The foremost reason against this assertion is that the essence of a culture is much more than simple images. In terms of helping tourists to have a deep understanding of a local culture in certain area, the real-world international traveling, instead of the Internet, is still a primary means by which a person can immerse him or her in a live cultural environment to grasp the cultural cores. For example, by face-to-face interaction with local residents, including closely observing, talking, listening, a tourist can directly and practically feel every detail about local traditions, social manners and rules, the way of speaking and thinking, and religious taboos. In comparison, it is impossible for an Internet user to recover the multi-dimensional cultural experience by merely reading texts and pictures on the screen.
