Nowadays, there is a growing tendency for the elderly to defer the retirement age. Some people think that it is a smart idea to work at an old age. Personally, it is a sensible idea.

To begin with, the elderly are symbols of wisdom, which practically increases with one’s age. People at old age usually possess a range of merits they accumulate from the long-time living and working experience. Though modern society is progressing with the constant update of knowledge and innovation of technology, the experience of working and sophistication of thinking still make the seniors stand out in all walks of life, particularly in political arena, medical work and economic circle. Thus, the wisdom of the elderly can be very demanding as it can be the compensation to the youth’s lack of experience.

It is true that senior citizens constitute a relatively large part of the population in many countries.While the common situation is that the majority of working people choose to retire after reaching a certain age, the issue of whether they should continue to work after state pension age has raised heated discussion.From my point of view, the advantages of extending retirement age far outweigh its disadvantages.

Let us start by considering the merits of work itself. Obviously, almost any job can keep a person fully occupied and well motivated for a whole day, thus helping him get rid of some notoriously bad habits, such as staying up late and skipping breakfast, that may pose a threat to personal health, especially that of senior citizens. If many people remain employed when they are old, the overall health of the population will improve to some extent, considerably reducing medical cost, a large contributor to the financial burden of the local government.

Another thing to consider is the benefits the elderly bring to the entire society. Having worked for several decades, senior workers have much more useful experience to offer and therefore play a crucial
