With the growth of economy, old buildings seem to lose the meaning of the existence, especially when the preservation is so costly. So some people claim that the old buildings should be knocked down to be replaced by the modern constructions. However, I totally disagree with the point of view for the following reasons.

First of all, the old buildings should be highly valued as they are historically and culturally significant. As the name implies, old buildings were constructed in the past. So they represent the thinking, the manner of life, the way of working of the ancient people and carry the important messages of the city they are built in. These buildings are more informative than any words or pictures in books to deliver historical and culture knowledge. In other words, to preserve the old buildings is to preserve the history and culture.

Governments now channel a large amount of the expenditure to the maintenance of archaic buildings, which is considered by some to be a waste of financial resources. While they may think that these buildings should be dismantled, my view is that only those valuable buildings deserve to be maintained.

The first thing to consider is the latent values of old buildings themselves. Some long-established buildings, if properly exploited and utilized, can be converted into tourist sites, thus boosting local economy by attracting foreign visitors. Also, the study of some ancient architecture enables people to gain a deeper insight into history and how people used to live. Besides, some buildings can fulfill special purposes in the current society. Take White House, the presidential office in the US, for example. Built in the 18th century, the oval office has since served as the residential area for American president as well as a place where many political activities are held.
