These days,various ways are being taken to protect old buildings because their irreplaceable value has been universally acknowledged .Large sums of money from the government has been allocated in retrofitting those old constructions. But this has aroused great controversy that the government spending should be put in housing and road construction since these two fields are of great significancefor a country's development .However,I do not agree with them .

One of the main reasons ,is that the cultural considerations should take precedence over utilitarian value of those historic buildings.For example ,some traditional buildings uniquely represent specific historic events or have exceptional aesthetic value. Beijing Hutong has been regarded as a symbol of old Beijing ,and even Qing Dynasty .If it cannot be preserved well due to being underfunded ,their art sense would seriously be damaged ,and accordingly the host city and the nation as a whole .

With the growth of economy, old buildings seem to lose the meaning of the existence, especially when the preservation is so costly. So some people claim that the old buildings should be knocked down to be replaced by the modern constructions on accommodation and road facilities. However, I totally disagree with the point of view for the following reasons.

First of all, the old buildings should be highly valued as they are historically and culturally significant. As the name implies, old buildings were constructed in the past. So they represent the thinking, the manner of life, the way of working of the ancient people and carry the important messages of the city they are built in. These buildings are more informative than any words or pictures in books to deliver historical and culture knowledge. In this regard, the restoration of old buildings is never a less essential job for the government as the preservation of culture and history is so significant to a nation.
