范文1：

It is common practice(惯例) all over the world to send criminals to prison and this is considered as the best way to deal with them. However, some people suggest that alternative solutions like offering them higher education are more effective. This essay will discuss the issue from both sides.

According to most people, it is necessary to send criminals to jail for public security and justice. It would have a deterrent effect on(对-起震慑作用) those who intend tocommit crimes(犯罪=break laws/do something illegal). On the contrary, if criminals can escape the punishment(逃脱惩罚), there is a risk that the crime rate(犯罪率) would increase and the society would become unstable and dangerous. In addition, it is fair for victims(受害人) and their relatives to see the criminals imprisoned, otherwise, people would protest and lose their trust in the government and the law.

With the incidence of crime hovering at high levels ,many citizens havebecome disturbed and alarmed . Sending those criminals to prisons is well advised to tackle this troublesome social problem conventionally worldwide . While, as for me, education may be a more effective way to help the government to address the root causes of crime.

In the first place ,there is no evidence showing a direct link between the imprisonment of criminals and the decline of crime rate .On the contrary , after being isolated in prison for some time, some prisoners are more likely to re-offend due to lack of essential knowledge and life skills ,which indicates the failure of the very intention of imprisonment .
