The recent years have witnessed the increased diversity in building styles, with few controls on them. However, there are both pros and cons to this issue and it should not be judged one-sidedly.

The advantages are obvious. To begin with, the encouragement of individuality of construction manner could help to build a city with diverse artistic forms. Constructions are likened to be the appearance of a city. When personal aesthetics is involved in building process, a variety of artistic forms will flourish. Such trend would be an effective way to promote the development of local culture and inspire a more prospective cultural atmosphere. Besides, labeling personal taste on the building style can be viewed as a release of one’s interest. The modern world differs from the past in motivating people to express themselves in the way they like. The sense of satisfaction brought by living in the building with individual preference would, in turn, be an incentive for citizens to make contribution to the city development. .

It has long been a controversy whether architectures in metropolisesshould be regulated according to certain standards, while a multitude of cities allow for more freedom in the styles of apartments and office buildings. To me, it does not look like a promising prospect in terms of its ramifications on safety and environment.

Superficially, such a freedom may be reckoned as a blessing to the diversity of a city’s scenery and cultural identity, though it does not make sense to me. With a wider variety of building styles, whether for homes or offices, the dwellers are provided with an alternative way to escape from the monotonous routines every day. Also, thanks to their unique genres, some fantastic designed architectures do play a role in attracting tourists. A convincing example are those magnificent urban spaces and landmarks in Barcelona, which bring in millions of dollars in tourism every year.
