As more and more foods can grace our dinner table, modern people begin to disregard leftovers in restaurants and shops, causing many unnecessary wastes. It is high time to dig the root causes and propose some possible solutions.
One underlying factor associated with wasteful behaviour is restaurants and shops may be unwilling to gear to changed lifestyle as a result of added costs. As technology advancement splits families into smaller units and allows solitary life possible, people no longer need large size of foods. Serving small size of food may incur dissatisfaction and more running costs. Consequently, the usual large portion of foods and increasing awareness of not eating overnight leftovers due to possible carcinogens contained compel people to become wastrels.
Lower food prices could be another main culprit. When food technology not only increases food supply but also expands food varieties with affordable prices, people would value foods less, believing they would be impossibly subject to food shortage as their elder generations were. Dazzling and inexpensive food options coax modern people to unwittingly purchase more than what they need. Therefore, any affordable waste of foods is nothing compared to convenience and happiness derived from the unwise consumption.

Undeniably, sales promotion and impulse consumption attract consumers to buy excessive food that lead to food waste. Firstly, some supermarkets sell their food, especially some convenience foods such as bread and salad, in bulk to promote sales, which islikely to result in food waste. This is because the period of quality guarantee of such foodis usually short, and some buyers cannot consume them before their expiry dates. Secondly, some people impulsively buy food, because their packaging looks aesthetically pleasing; however, theirtastes are not that delicious. Hence, they do not eat them anymore.
Additionally, extravagant and wasteful consumption culture in some countries is a primary cause of food waste in restaurants. To be specific, consumers tend to provision their friends with excessive dishes to show their respect, generosity and wealth. However, those food cannot be fully utilized, so food waste is not avoided.
