Some people maintain that sport is essential for the whole society while others claim it is merely a free time activity for individuals. This essay will discuss both views and present my opinion.

To begin with, it is argued that sport brings benefits to society. The first benefit is that sport is played at many levels, including by the national teams of all countries. This gives citizens of acountry a chance to feel pride in the nation’s sports victories and brings them together for the celebrations when their team wins. Secondly, sports are played at the level of schools and local clubs. This helps bring young people in the community together and improves their physical health. A nation’s workforce needs to be healthy to be able to carry out their responsibilities and sporting activities can help in this matter.

Turning to the second opinion, it is claimed that sport is merely a leisure activity. However, I cannot agree with this argument because sport can build many bonds in society. Many sports for example, require teamwork and team spirit. It is this team spirit that benefits both individuals and members of local sports teams. Playing together in team sports like football and basketball can greatly add to the population’s health and happiness. Society will receive beneficial effects from this because a healthier and happier population will need less healthcare from the government to treat mental and physical illness. This will save a significant amount of money that can be used by the government to build more infrastructure like schools, hospitals, roads and so on.

In conclusion, it is my opinion that sport brings rewards to both individuals and to society. Sport is an important part of a nation’s cultural identity.
