The reason why many people believe that most of the government funding should go to subjects such as engineering, agriculture, and medicine is probably that they have just a one-sided conception about what development and progress of a country really means.

The most obvious sign of a country’s development and progress is of course itseconomic prosperity and material wealth. In this sense, arguing that the government should mainly support science-related subjects makes a lot of sense. Only with enough talents working in various scientific fields can a country become strong economically. The more scientific and technological breakthroughs a country makes, the more developed it is. This has been proved true by the 19th-century U.K. and 20th-century U.S.A., who largely depended on, respectively, industrial revolution and automobile industry for their prosperity.
