The bar chart illustrates changes in the percentage of people who lived independently in terms of five groups aged over 18 years old from 1850 to 2000.

Appropriately 25% of 26-40 years old people led a solitary life. Despite a slight decrease in 1900, the figure nearly doubled to about 45% in 2000. Similarly, the youngest group living independently doubled to 20%. Those aged 56-65 and over 65 who lived alone took up no more than 5% initially. The percentage of the former group experienced a steady rise to 15%, while that of the latter group decreased slightly in the last 50 years from a peak of 15%.
