Nowadays, we are all too often bombarded with various advertisements on television and a large proportion of them are children-targeted.

On the one hand, advertisers may claim that television ads are full of useful information for children and their parents. This is true to a certain extent. In some cases, parents are more likely to choose the right quality products according to what a commercial or infomercial teaches, especially after careful comparison. For example, parents who know nothing about music may find a qualified piano teacher or a swimming class as an extracurricular activity for their kids after watching ads provided by some education centres on TV. On the other hand, television ads can be misleading and therefore have negative influence on children. As manufacturers and companies are often profit-oriented, they have a tendency to exaggerate the merits of their goods but conceal their demerits. The advertisers often have a deep insight into children’s psychology and behaviors which are taken advantage of in their advertising to make their products, whether a toy, a snack, or a restaurant, more alluring for those young minds. As a result, the innocent young often fall victims to the predator and ask their parents to buy whatever is advertised, regardless of price and function.

As television ads can be classified into different categories, they should be treated differently accordingly. Those ads containing misleading even harmful information should be banned and the producers are supposed to be penalised severely. In some sensitive fields like drugs, snacks and toys, governments should scrutinise the contents of related ads rigidly.
