Information technology and high speed modern transportation provide us with more options when choosing our residence. For instance, people used to live in Beijing if they work there, but now they can live in Tianjin while working in Beijing due to the high speed inter-city train. Some teleworkers can even live in Hainan or overseas but still work for a company in the Capital with the support of the Internet.

Of course the benefits of such lifestyle cannot be denied. The increased flexibility is welcomed by those couples who work for two distant companies. The wife would not have to either sacrifice her career for family union or suffer from long distance commute to workplace. In addition to the balance between the family and the work, the geographical limit free in residence also eliminates the boundary of employment. The employees and employers both enjoy a wider range of labor market, local and global as well. Higher mobility can also be a solution to urban problems. Housing prices can be expected to drop since the demand for living in major cities would go down.

However, freedom does not come at no cost. While computer technology and airplanes support free choice of residence, they weaken the sense of belonging to a community or a company because for remote workers, the opportunity of talking in person with colleagues or engaging in collective activities would significantly diminish which may lead to employees feeling isolated or less motivated and employers losing cohesion and employees’ loyalty. In addition, when people are allowed to make a choice among many, they are less likely to settle down, which is 。。。。
