Electronic communication devices such as mobile phones and computers are widely used in our life. We talk and text on phone and email on the Internet about everything ranging from formal work businesses, school instruction, to daily trivial routines. Therefore some may be concerned that we are losing our face to face communication ability.
It is true that using digital media, we reduce our chance to talk with others inperson, hence probably resulting in lower ability to read and understand emotional cues of people and properly react. The reason for this
effect involves the defect of such technologies that facial and
body gestures are excluded. This influence may be more obvious in school students who get used to those smart technological gadgets at an early age when their social skills have not been fully developed.
However, it is exaggerating to say we are losing such ability. There are still chances for non-virtual communication in our life and consequently this skill cannot be lost. An overwhelming majority of young students attend school physically and interact with their teachers and peers directly. Furthermore, students are not allowed to use mobiles in most schools. At workplace, workers discuss complex or challenging issues with their supervisor or colleagues in person in many cases, especial when teamwork is involved. Many services cannot be delivered by phone or computer, including hospitality, medical, psychological counseling and 。。。。
