Most developed countries are providing assistance to developing nations. It has been argued that governments should not spend the money on foreign aid but in stead they should take care of the needy people in their own country like the homeless and unemployed. In my opinion, governments of rich countries should do both.

First of all, there are basically two kinds of organizations that provide aid to developing nations. That is, governments, and also charity organizations like the Red Cross, Oxfam and so on. Between these two, there is a difference in motivation for giving assistance. Charities are motivated by unselfish concern and compassion for human suffering, while with governments there is usually political or commercial gain that they hope to receive in return. For example,if a rich nation builds a bridge or a road to give to a poorer nation, they expect to make trade deals that boost their own economy such as tax breaks for industries that the donor country wants to set up in the poor country. It is profit, not compassion that motivates most governmental international aid. It would be a better world if governments took care of deprived populations, both overseas and in their own country without expecting to gain advantage from it.
