2020年8月15日雅思写作范文:Some scientists believe that studying the behaviour of 3-year-old children can tell which children would grow up to be criminals. To what extent in your opinion is crime a product of human nature or is it possible to stop children from growing up to be criminals?

范文:

Are individuals born to be evil or kind? The debate over nature versus nurture lasts for centuries religiously and scientifically. Since whether personalities are inextricably linked to certain inborn genes that can be inherited from parents still remains controversial, it is rather reckless to assume that crime is simply determined by the so-called 'human nature'. As far as I am concerned, a criminal path could be influenced by various factors, many of which are preventable.

First and foremost, to judge whether a person would be an outlaw merely according to his or her traits in early childhood tends to be arbitrary. Over this stage: many behaviours are formed unconsciously, driven by the human instinct of mimicking others around, including parents and older siblings. For the majority, only part of their personalities might be developed, and it is far yet too early to shape any concrete cognition of the world, let alone being able to truly distinguish right from wrong with in-depth understanding of many abstract aspects, such as positive life attitude and social value and responsibilities. Hence, is it fair and realistic to predict that a quite toddler would grow into a sophisticated serial killer or a noisy one would eventually become an armed robber?

Moreover, children in this phase are still full of uncertainties, ranging from their characteristics to their future career and social circle. Being relatively introverted in early childhood, for example, does not mean that individuals are doomed to be a sociopath with a twisted mind, while not all aggressive children will grow into ruthless gangsters, to name but two. How long certain characters could dominate a person is partially influenced by the education received and the living environment. The adulthood life conditions could also be an inducement of breaking laws. Being self-centred since childhood, those with a well-paid job are very likely to be annoying to their colleagues but do not have to commit a crime for a living; by contrast, it is possible that humble children would eventually fail to resist the temptation of the huge profit gained from drug trafficking simply due to the gradually-developed greediness prompted by the joint-effect between peer influence and their less satisfied financial conditions.
